The Continental Army

The Continental Army was a group of soldiers that had a leader by hierarchy.  A hierarchy is a system where people or groups are ranked higher than the other.  The Provincial Congress of Massachusetts were trying to find a leader to guide the army.  For the meantime, they asked the Continental Congress to take over it.  The Congress felt that they had to act quickly.  At the thought of having John Adams, the army became a continental one.  During the New England delegation, Thomas Jefferson had chosen George Washington to be the next commander of the army.  Washington was elected by a unanimous agreement.  The next day, John Hancock, the president of the Congress, had announced to Washington about his appointment.  In a short speech, he accepted his position.

After that, Washington left to Philadelphia and was offered a big pay for being a general of the army.  In October 1775, the Committee of Congress had visited the camp at Cambridge.  With the consultation of Washington, they agreed to change the reorganization of the army.  At the encampment at Valley Forge, they spent some time planning the reorganization of the army.  They decided to adjust all the soldiers' pay.  Each soldier who served until the end of the war were promised $80.

Strengths of the Colonists

The colonists were a small group compared to the British, but they still had some tactical advantages.  For example, they knew the land and battlefields better.  In addition, they knew the British forts a lot more because they once owned them.  Motivators like Samuel Adams, had started the war for what was called a ‘just cause’.  Diplomats like Ben Franklin, and leaders like George Washington, were not uncommon amongst the colonies.  Due to lives of hunting, the colonists were a better shot than the British and they could have been thought as cowardly because of their hiding behind barriers. The common fighting style was to march in a strait line firing at the opposing line.

(jonathan thybulle)

The colonists preferred to use their surroundings and attacks from the walls and trees. One of the greatest helps to their cause was the French. They sent officers like Layette, and their navy to help put the British in checkmate at the Battle of Saratoga. Also the British was fighting far away from home. The british had a really hard objective. The colonist started to claim continued to gain validity.

Weaknesses of the Continental Army

“Posterity would regard as “fiction” the circumstances under which Americans achieved victory in the War for Independence," so wrote General George Washington. (http://www.history.army.mil/books/RevWar/risch/chpt-1.htm)  Washington was correct; it is nearly impossibility that the colonies won. The British were the military world super-power. They were well disciplined and organized in fighting style and strategy. The British also had enough money to supply and equipped their men.

However they also had enough money that they could hire the Hessian. The Hessians were German mercenaries from Count William of Hesse-Hanau. Duke Charles I of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel; Prince Frederick of Waldeck; Margrave Karl Alexander of Ansbach-Bayreuth. Last but not least Prince Frederick Augustus of Anhalt-Zerbst to King George. These statements prove that the colonist should have lost for they were out numbered, out skilled. Plus were with out finical support compare to the British.

Reasons Why the Continental Army won:

There where four main reasons why the Americans was able to win. They had superior leaders, they were assisted by Spain and France, they knew their territory well, and their moral was really high. These factors allowed the continental army to surpass tough challenges and eventually beat the British army. General Washington lead the army to success and unlike the British generals, George Washington wasn't cocky. The help from the French and Spanish also helped a lot it gave supplies and made Britain have to spread out his troops to fight in different places. At the beginning of the war the Spanish and French weren't involved in the war yet so the British had to focus on one battlefront sending only one big group of men. After the Spanish and French got involved Britain was forced to spread his troops out. The moral during the Revolutionary war high the soldiers were fighting for freedom, this made them keep going even in the worst situation. The moral was boosted by two books "common Sense" and "Crisis", these books inspired the colonist a lot during this period. The last factor that led the Americans to victory is that they knew their territory. They Knew how to move around, hiding spots and other things that gave them an advantage. Since the Americans had these four advantages they were able to defeat the British and become their own independent country.

I would recommend you all start gathering research and deciding how you are going to break the project up. The point is not to repeat the information over and over. Break it up and decide, who is responsible for what to complete the subtopic.

The war was really. Expensive and the British population debated its necessity. In Parliament, there were many American sympathizers. Finally, the alliance with the French gave Americans courage and a tangible threat that tipped the scales in America's favor. that gave us americans a huge advantage. That is another reason why we won.
