The Battles of Lexington and Concord were the first engagements between the British and the Americans. They were fought on April 19, 1775, in Middlesex County, Province of Massachusetts Bay, within the towns of Lexington, Concord, Lincoln, Menotomy (present-day Arlington), and Cambridge, near Boston. These battles marked the outbreak armed conflict between Great Britain and the thirteen British colonies. The "shot heard 'round the world" took place during the battles of Lexington and Concord.
These first shots marked the beginning of the American revolution! These battles of bravery are what began America, and what ended the thirteen British colonies. If these battles had not occurred or took place the American Revolution may have not taken place or at least taken place at a later time in history. Which is why the battles of Lexington and Concord are often mentioned when recalling the Revolutionary War of America.-Sarah
Life before the battle was definitely a lot more peaceful and calmer than the life after the battle of Lexington and Concord. Before the battle the Patriots got a lot of more taxes than what they deserved. Before taking action the Patriots had no freedom they had to do as the king told them to. It was really quiet before the attack because there was no one trying to fight. Before the battle the Patriots still thought that the king was unfair with them. They thought that the king was rude because he did what he wanted and made others do the same. Life ahead of the fight was worse than what it was after the battle. - Nikky
Life before the battle was like a world without people! The world was the quietest it possibly could've been before the battle of Lexington and Concord. Although before the battle their were some problems it never really turned into a really big issue. However after the kings demands got bigger the worse the matter got. The truth is that life was way better before the battle because it was a lot more rural that after the destructable war.We would be able to see how Lexington and Concord were if we would be able to go back in time. -Nikky
This is what Lexington and Concord looked like before the war. The map of Lexington and Concord.
General Thomas Gage had learned that the colonists were supplied with arms and ammunition and ordered his men to take or destroy the American's supply of arms and ammunition stored in Concord. He also wanted John Hancock and Sam Adams, now at Lexington, arrested. When Dr. Joseph Warren, Boston Committee leader learned of these plans he called for William Dawes and Paul Revere telling them to ride to Lexington, then Concord and warn the minutemen to be ready. The two took separate roads leaving Dawes to successfully dodge British sentries by blending in with some soldiers and Revere to gallop down another road and meet with a friend giving the friend instructions to hang two lanterns in the steeple of the Old North Church. Revere then galloped to the village of Charles-town, where associates, who had seen the signal met him with a horse. Revere got to Lexington first and alarmed the townspeople. Hancock and Adams were taken to a safe hiding place, while Captain Jonas Parker and 130 men stood ready to block the British.-Sarah
(Funny tune explaining the battle of Lexington and Concord.)
The scenery of the battle was not a mighty one in fact it was a very unpleasant sight. To one side of the field the king and his soldiers and to the other side the Patriots. All was quiet until the first shot also known as “The Shot Heard around the World (after the shot all was a chaos)." The kings’soldiers started firing and so did the Patriots. Many soldiers were killed and some were injured. As the fight went on many more were hurt and minute after minute there was one less soldier on the field. The soldiers and Patriots fought until they finally thought they couldn’t take the pain any more. Soon after a while of fighting there were no soldiers and Patriots on the field. Some soldiers and Patriots either ran away due to the fear of getting killed while others risked their lives for either freedom or for staying with the king. The scene of the battle was definitely a horrific scenery. -Nikky
A scenery of the battle. Another scene of the battle.
During the battle of Lexington and Concord the red coats had come to America to take the weapons in which was used by the rebels and/or patriots. They had taken ammunition and guns which was mainly a musket. To be more specific the patriots used a gun called teh brown bess musket A musket is a long rifle that can either be a single shot or a grape shot shooter. A grape shot was basically firing multiple bullets as one time. A musket was poor in accuracy and took a period of time to just reload. Even though ut had diasabilities the musket was still a very efficient gun. Though this gun was created by the English it was a common weapon to the troops of America. -Jonas
The weapons used by the british weren't very different from the patriots. They both used muskets for battle. The difference between the weapons they used is that the british had a better arsenal of weapons. The british were equipped with a musket and a bayonet as an attachment. A bayonet is a knife attached to a weapon which is a gun. The bayonet gave the british a massive advantage during battle. Since the guns they used were bad at accuracy at and took a massive amount of time to reload they used bayonets to attack from close range. The bayonet was like a second resort if the gun had run out of ammo. The british also carried swords. Though swords were slowly being replaced by guns the british still used them to lead their soldiers to battle. -Jonas
This is a bayonet without being attached to a gun This is a picture of a sword used during the American revolution
Life after the battle was tough for both the patriots and the British. After the battle, the British had to fight their way back to Boston. Boston was over 16 miles away from them. In total, it took them eight hours to get back to Boston. The heaviest fighting was in Menotomy (present day Arlington, M.A). All togther, the fighting caused about 241 casualties.
The patriots also some casualties during the battle of Lexington. They also lost some supplies. Though, after these battles Congress had a new patriot from Virginia to command the continental army. That patriot was George Washington, a farmer from Virginia. As George Washington prepared for the war, the Congress signed the Olive Branch Petition on July fifth. The petition was signed to try to make peace between the British and colonies. Though the King didn't read it and started looking for a new punishment for the colonies.

The importance of the battle: The importance of this battle is that it was the first engagement between the armies. Nobody believed that there would be firing. This proved to many people that the patriots were willing to fight for freedom. It also showed that the patriots had a chance to win. The patriots saw how the British used their out-dated fighting tactics. It gave them confidence. This war apparently had great significance.-Wisaam
