                                                                                                    The Townshend Acts

What are the Townshend Acts?

The Townshend Act is an act in 1767. It was started by Charles Townshend and passed by the English Parliament a while after the Stamp Act. They were made to collect taxes from the colonists in America by taxes on imports of glass, lead, paints, paper, and tea. John Dickinson, Samuel Adems and a lot of other people protested against these outrageous taxes because it was not fair to them or anyone else. The Boston merchants boycotted against English goods again. They got in big trouble because of what they did. The Townshend acts eventually resulted to the Boston Massacre.

What the Townshend Acts mean?

The Townshend Acts were just another way to collect taxes from the colonists. The word The Townshend Acts is actually a noun, its orgin is american history, and its defination is acts of the British Parliament in 1767, especially the act that placed duties on tea, paper, lead, and paint. The Townshend Acts mean alot of things and had alot of items being taxed. The Townshend acts were mostly for helping pay the expenses involved in governing the American colonies. They tried stopping the unessisary taxes by 1767. In 1770 all the taxes except the tax on tea were stopped.

Who is Charles Townshend?

Charles Townshend was a British Chancellor of the Exchequer. The British Chancellor of the Exchequer is basically what we call a Treasurer. Charles Townshend is the one who came up with the Townshend Acts to tax people. After he came up with the idea he gave it to the English Parliament and they approved  of the idea. The acts as you can see are also named after Charles Townshend. Charles Townshend died right before the act became apparent. But it still came apparent so that is why the Townshend Acts is named after Charles Townshend because he made the Townshend Acts and died right before it became apparent to the community.

The Townshend Acts were two Bills passed through the Parliament of Great Britain on July 2, 1767. They were named after the Chancellor of the Exchequer and his name is Charles Townshend. The purpose of the Townshend Acts was to raise money to be collected locally and retained by the governors of the colonies to pay for the French and Indian Wars. They needed money for supplies, weapons, and food. Virginians including  Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry, Carter Braxton, Richard Henry Lee, and George Washington passed the Virginia Non-importation Resolution threatening  to boycott British goods. They stated that they would buy from France and Spain instead. The Townshend Act was repealed in 1770, after only 33 months.

The year before the King and Parliament repealed the Stamp Tax after many protests from the colonies. In 1767 Charles Townshend decided to pass a new act called the Townshend acts. These new taxes made the colonists angry all over again and they organized many boycotts. The Sons of Liberty reorganized and new boycotts were called. The tax collectors were being assaulted again. The tax collectors were assaulted because it was over the Stamp Act. The second time they were assaulted was because it was over the Townshend Acts.

The Townshend Act is one of the many acts that were passed to tax the colonists. The Townshend Act was created so there would be a tax on items such as glass, lead, paper, paint, and tea. The Townshend Acts were indirect, that means the tax was collected at port. Glass, lead, paper, paint, and tea were necessary items in the colonists daily lives. Colonists organized a boycott to state that they wouldn't buy these products. This Act also states that colonial officials such as governors and judges would get there salaries directly from the crown. They called this “Taxation without Representation” because they were being taxed without being consulted.

The Townshend acts was a very important act. The townshend acts is applying taxes to glass, paint, oil, lead, paper, and tea. these taxes were applied because of the french and indian war and great britain was in deep dept anf they needed money, so they made the britain citizens pay taxes to pay for it. The townshend acts started in 1767. this act began as a series of other developed acts. Another reason why the townshend act took place is because great britain had to pay his officials ( judges and govenors) .

The townshend act lead into a series of outcomes but the most important one is called the boston massacre. the boston masscre was when the parliament repealed all taxes except tea. all because they relized that what they were doing wasn't fair to their citizens. the tea act was kept so the colonists would know that the parliment had the right to tax them.

     Boston Massacre

The Townshend Acts eventually led to the Boston Massacre. The Boston Massacre was when a few Red Coats killed  few colonists who started throwing rocks and snowballs at the Red Coats. In retaliation the Red Coats started firing at the colonists and killed some on the spot, and others died later on. The Boston Massacre was a very big thing that sparked the American Revolution. The Boston Massacre was started by the Townshend Acts because the colonists were angry at Parliament for making them pay for those taxes without representation.

The Townshend Acts were basically taxes on lead, paint, glass, and many other things. If you can imagine, these things were bought on  regular basis, and the colonists were very poor at this time because they just moved into
